Attention all!! The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived and will be open December 10th -14th during the school day. The Book Fair will also be open Tuesday, December 11th from 5:00-6:00 prior to the beginning of PTO at 6:00. As always, one day during the week is set aside to encourage parents, grandparents, and the like to shop with our students. Thursday is Terrific Thursday. Students who bring an adult to shop during the morning will be able to register for prizes to be given away Thursday afternoon. Prizes include books, posters, pencils, erasers, and much more. We hope to see you this week at the Scholastic Book Fair Blizzard!

Leo the Library Mouse

Kindergarten students were introduced to Leo the Library Mouse this week. Leo lives in the library and helps teach students about book care. He has developed a coloring book that he shares with students to show them the proper ways to care for books. Students learn to wash their hands before reading a book, to use a bookmark instead of folding the pages of book, to do artwork on pieces of paper rather than in a book, to keep books away from younger brothers and sisters, and many more book care rules.

Locating Books in the Easy Section

First grade students spent the week learning to locate specific books in the Easy section of the media center. They learned that books are shelved in alphabetical order by the author’s last name in both the Easy and Fiction sections. Students also identified the appropriate shelf to search if they had written a book that was housed in our media center.

The classes discussed some of their favorite authors and how to find books by that author. The students pictured are completing a cut and paste activity practicing alphabetical order.

Constitution Day

Second grade students in Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Ritchie’s classrooms visited the media center during their Constitution Day studies. Students visited the website www.constitutionc en ter.org and completed an activity to restore the wording in the Bill of Rights. The activity allowed students to identify the rights that the people of Freeville were exercising in their daily activites.

Grandparents’ Day

Watwood will celebrate Grandparents’ Day this Friday, September 14th, from 1:00-2:00. I hope you are making plans to visit and participate in the afternoon’s activities. Mr. Wiggle Meets Kindergarten

Kindergarten students are learning about the proper care of books from Mr. Wiggle. He is a bookworm who lives in a book that has been mistreated by its readers. By sharing his story, Mr. Wiggle hopes to educate kindergarten students on how to take care of books properly. Pictured are students from Mrs. Humber’s class with the Mr. Wiggle puppets they made.

Landform Studies in Second Grade

Second grade students from Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Ritchie’s classes have been studying landforms in their classrooms.

These classes integrated research skills into their unit by visiting the media center to view a United Streaming video on landforms and then conducting basic research on an educational internet sight.

Our Visit With Mr. Sargent and His Friends

What a great time we had with children’s book author Mr. Sargent and his friends, Daphne, Emma, Spike, and Tatum. We learned about becoming an author and writing about things that happend in our very own lives. Mr. Sargent writes books about his pets. We were fortunate to hear him share some of his stories.

Daphne, Queen of the Universe, displayed her royalty for us. Spike, Emma, and Tatum were show-offs with their tricks. The way our teachers were loving on the dogs, I’m surprised Mr. Sargent was able to get them back.

Our thanks go out to Ozark Publishing for arranging Mr. Sargent’s visit with us!
