Once again, Watwood is participating in the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club. This program is designed to enhance the language arts curriculum by encouraging students to read. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before February 22nd , tracks this reading time with a reading log, and submits the signed verification form will receive a certificate of participation in the program and a FREE ticket to Six Flags! Certificates and tickets will be given in May at Awards Day. The reading verification forms were sent home with students in December. See Mrs. Forbus if you need a new one. Happy reading everyone!

Special thanks go out to Miss Arrington’s father for the donations he recently made to our school. We really appreciate those in the community who support our school through their generosity. Of special interest to our teachers might be two books donated to the media center – PowerPoint Workshop for Teachers by Janet Caughlin and Step by Step Microsoft PowerPoint Version 2002. Come by and check them out!

Circulation statistics in our media center show increases each year. Hooray! That means we are reading more and more books. The more you read, the more you know. Watching the books fly off of the shelves is a wonderful thing! Just remember when you finish reading the book to return it to the media center so that others can read it as well. Parents, check with your students on a regular basis to make sure they are reading and returning books. Overdue notices are sent to the homeroom teachers on a regular basis, so students are aware if they have books to be returned.

Did you know that as residents of Alabama we have access to the wonderful resources within the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL)? The AVL site provides us with encyclopedias, thousands of magazine and newspaper articles, books, maps, pictures, links to thousand of internet sites, and many other resources. All of this is FREE to the people of our state. The AVL can be accessed in public schools, public libraries, and you can use it at home if you have internet access and an AVL card. You can obtain a card from the public library or from your school library media center. If you are interested in obtaining a card, send a note to your child’s teacher. A card will be issued from our school’s media center in your child’s name. Cards should be renewed every three years before the expiration date. Renewals can be done at your child’s school.
